For hundreds of years until the 1900s, in today's China, Japan, North and South Korea, and Vietnam, literati of Classical Chinese or Literary Sinitic (wenyan ) could communicate in writing interactively, despite not speaking each other's languages. This book outlines the historical background of, and the material conditions that led to, widespread literacy development in premodern and early modern East Asia, where reading and writing for formal purposes was conducted in Literary Sinitic. To exemplify how 'silent conversation' or 'brush-assisted conversation' is possible through writing-mediated brushed interaction, synchronously face-to-face, this book presents contextualized examples from recurrent contexts involving (i) boat drifters; (ii) traveling literati; and (iii) diplo- matic envoys. Where profound knowledge of classical canons and literary works in Sinitic was a shared attribute of the brush-talkers concerned, their brush-talk would characteristically be intertwined with poetic improvisation. Being the first monograph in English to address this fascinating lingua-cultural practice and cross-border communication phenomenon, which was possibly sui generis in Sinographic East Asia, it will be of interest to students of not only East Asian languages and linguistics, history, international relations, and diplomacy, but also (historical) pragmatics, sociolinguistics, sociology of language, scripts and writing systems, and cultural and linguistic anthropology.

Understanding the stress state in the earth's crust is crucial for engineers working in rock, particularly with regard to underground construction. Experience shows that an adequately high horizontal in-situ stress has a positive effect in stabilizing large span rock caverns close to the ground surface. On the other hand, high stresses resulting from large overburden, for example, may cause spalling and rock burst, threatening the integrity of the construction. The location, orientation and support design of underground structures takes into account the magnitude and orientation of in-situ rock stresses, considering such factors as gravity, topography, tectonics, residual stress, pore pressure change and geological structures. An accurate knowledge of in-situ rock stress can only be obtained by physical measurement, and over the last few years there has been substantial development in techniques and in interpretation of the results. The papers in this volume will be of particular interest to those working in tunnelling and mining and in petroleum exploration and production.

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is one of the most important endocrine (tissue-to-tissue), paracrine (cell-to-cell) and intracrine (intracellular/nuclear) humoral systems in the regulation of blood pressure, cardiovascular, and kidney function in health and disease. The RAS has remarkably evolved from the initial discovery of the rate-limiting enzyme renin to a complex biochemical and physiological cascade involving more than a dozen members. Currently, there are up to five axes or pathways identified in the RAS; each has its substrate, enzyme, effector peptide, receptor, and downstream signaling pathways. These include the renin/ACE/ANG II/AT1 receptor, the APA/ANG III/AT2 receptor, the ACE2/ANG (1-7)/Mas receptor, the prorenin/prorenin receptor (PRR), and the ANG IV/AT4 receptor (IRAP) pathways. Accordingly, the roles of the RAS have expanded well beyond the classic endocrine paradigm as a powerful vasoconstrictor, a potent aldosterone stimulator, or a sodium-retaining hormonal system. The goals of this article are to review and discuss the current insights into and new perspectives on the expression, localization, and novel actions of the RAS with a focus in the kidney. Special emphasis will be placed on recently discovered new members of the RAS derived from studies using innovative mutant rats or mice that either overexpress (knockin) or are deficient (knockout) of a particular substrate, enzyme, ANG peptide, or receptor. Several factors may contribute to, and influence upon, the formation of in-situ rock stress including gravity, topography, tectonic effect, residual stress, pore pressure change and geological structures. This makes it difficult to evaluate in-situ rock stress by indirect means. In other words, physical measurements have to be performed in order to get the true and accurate knowledge of in-situ rock stress. However, a number of indirect methods give approximate estimate of the rock stress which may be the only available method and often good enough for engineering purposes. In the last years, substantial development in techniques for measuring in-situ stress and interpretation of the measurement result has taken place.
